Consumer Confidence declines again in November
The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, which had decreased sharply in October, declined again in November. The Index now stands at 70.4, down from 72.4 in October.
German consumer sentiment at six-year high
Consumer sentiment in Germany has hit the highest level in more than six years, buoyed by a robust jobs market and solid income expectations, the country's leading market research institute said last Wednesday. GfK's forward-looking consumer sentiment indicator rose to 7.4 points in December from an upwardly revised 7.1 points in November, beating economists' forecasts and hitting the highest level since Aug. 2007.
U.S. jobless claims fall 10,000 to 316,000
Initial claims for jobless benefits, a measure of layoffs, decreased by 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 316,000 in the week ended Nov. 23, the Labor Department said last Wednesday. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had forecast 330,000 new claims.
UK GDP growth by 0.8%
Economic growth in the UK was driven by consumer spending in the third quarter of the year, Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures show. Consumer spending, which accounts for nearly two-thirds of the UK's economic activity, also rose by 0.8%.
